Book Repairs

We offer bespoke rebinding and repair services, ranging from minor to extensive repairs. The kind of books that we work with include leather bindings, early printed books, first editions, historical journals, manuscripts, atlases, miniature books, bibles, and family heirlooms, such as cookbooks, diaries, and annuals.
The work involved in a repair generally falls into three categories:
Total repair – Page sections will be restitched, and damaged pages will be repaired as needed. We will closely match new materials with the original cover to create a flowing, ‘sympathetic’ repair, which retainsas much of the existing cover as possible, while restoring the book to readable, durable condition.
Re-backing – The book’s spine will be removed and replaced, retaining the original boards. Where possible, the existing spine will be remounted. If the original is unsalvageable, an option for text embossing on the new spine is available.
Re-binding – The original binding is replaced with a new cover using traditional methods and appropriate binding styles.

The materials we use :
There are a number of options available for cover materials depending on preference, practicality and budget. These materials include linen, buckram, goat leather, calf leather, rexine, and hand marbled paper. Marbled and acid free endpapers protect the text, and are carefully selected to compliment the cover; original endpapers may be retained depending on condition and preference. Leather in the original binding is cleaned and treated to restore its lustre and preserve it and prevent cracking.

Pricing is assessed on an individual basis, and is based on the extent of the damage to the book, and the materials involved in the repair or rebinding. If you would like a quotation for repair work, please bring in the book for a free consultation, or send photographs to info@hubertbookbinding.com.
